Lady Buffs basketball survives late ALC charge

Milligan College, Tenn. (Jan. 17, 2011) --- The Milligan College women's basketball team survived a late charge from Alice Lloyd College to take a 58-54 victory on Monday afternoon inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.

The opening minutes of the game saw neither team able to get on the board. Johneshia Good (Johnson City, Tenn.) took advantage of a fast break transition to put Milligan on the board first with 17:09 on the clock. The Lady Buffs held the Lady Eagles scoreless for five minutes to open the game, but when Alice Lloyd finally got on the board, Megan Casteel (Greeneville, Tenn.) quickly responded with a 3-pointer of her own.

The rest of the half saw Milligan add to their lead as Victoria Dailey (Knoxville, Tenn.) drained a 3-pointer to give the Lady Buffs a 20-11 lead with six minutes remaining in the period. Milligan took a 24-17 lead into halftime.

The Lady Buffs opened the second half on a 9-2 run to take a 33-19 lead in the early minutes of the period. Alice Lloyd responded with a run as they slowly trimmed their deficit. The Lady Eagles pulled within six points, but Kayla Kelly (Chattanooga, Tenn.) hit a basket and plus one to put Milligan up 44-35 at the midpoint of the period.

Milligan went up 53-38 lead with six minutes remaining when Alisha Mainer (Flag Pond, Tenn.) scored a basket and a foul shot. However, the Lady Eagles made a late 15-0 run to tie the game at 53 with three minutes left in the game. A Mainer free throw put the Lady Buffs up by one with 2:51 left on the scoreboard, but Alice Lloyd tied the game with a free throw of their own as 1:21 remained on the clock.

Milligan took a 56-54 lead with just over a minute left on a Mainer basket. On Alice Lloyd's next possession, Good came away with a steal. Ashlee Price (Rogersville, Tenn.) added a pair of free throws on the ensuing Milligan possession, and Mainer secured the victory with a free throw in the final seconds.

Milligan was led by Mainer's 14 points and nine rebounds. Good added 11 points, while Casteel added 10 points. Dorian Freeman (Augusta, Ga.) added seven rebounds for the Lady Buffs.

With the win, Milligan improves to 14-6 overall. They remain 2-2 in AAC play.

The Lady Buffs return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 19, when they resume AAC play with a trip to Barbourville, Ky., for a game with Union College. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
