Buffs basketball rallies over Union in thriller

Barbourville, Ky. (Jan. 19, 2011) --- The Milligan College men's basketball team overcame a double-digit deficit as Hudson Fricke (Greeneville, S.C.) drained a 3-pointer in the closing seconds to give the Buffs their first lead of the night and a 90-86 victory over Union College on Wednesday night in Robison Arena in Barbourville, Ky.

The first half belonged to Union as they quickly ran out to an 11-2 lead. Milligan began to find their offensive rhythm, but trailed 28-14 with 10 minutes remaining in the period. The Buffs continued to try and cut the deficit, but trailed 51-33 at the half.

After trailing by 20 points with 15 minutes left on the clock, the Buffs went on a 21-3 run to pull within two points at the midpoint of the second half. Milligan cut the gap to 77-76 with four minutes left off of a Marshall Hardy (Kingsport, Tenn.) layup. However, Union quickly went back to a seven point lead with 2:50 remaining.

Milligan would not be denied as Fricke hit a 3-pointer and Justin Sylvester (Kingsport, Tenn.) scored from 3-point range after a Tim Harper (Catawba, N.C.) steal to close the Buffs within one point with 2:10 left. Sylvester tied the game at 85 with just over a minute remaining. On the ensuing Bulldog possession, Harper recorded a steal to set up Fricke's 3-pointer to put the Buffs in front with 17 seconds remaining. After a Union free throw, Tyler DeVault (Kingsport, Tenn.) secured the win with a pair of free throws in the game's final seconds.

Milligan was led by Fricke's 20 points and Sylvester's 18. Cordero Seymour (Inagua, Bahamas) added 16 points, while Kyle Grisby (Charlotte, N.C.) and DeVault had nine and eight points, respectively.

As a team, the Buffs were 29-of-60 (48%) from the floor and 11-of-21 (52%) from behind the arc. Union was 30-of-53 (56%) from the field and 5-of-10 (50%).

With the win, Milligan moves to 4-1 in AAC action and 8-9 overall.

The Buffs return to action on Saturday, Jan. 22, when they host Montreat College inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m.
