Milligan men's basketball takes AAC opener

Milligan College, Tenn. (Nov. 30, 2011) --- The Milligan College men's basketball opened AAC play in style as they captured a 92-69 victory over Virginia Intermont on Wednesday night inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
 
   In the first half, Mickey Woods (Port Arthur, Tex.) scored Milligan's first seven points to give the Buffaloes a 7-2 lead four minutes into the game. However, VI cut the Milligan lead to one, but the Buffaloes responded with a 6-2 run to extend their lead to 13-8 with just over 12 minutes remaining in the half.
 
   The Cobras slowly cut the Milligan lead to one point by the 10 minute point as Milligan led 15-14. However, Corey Hendren (Lexington, S.C.) drained a 3-pointer to spark a 10-3 run, eight of which came off Hendren points. That shot sparked Milligan to take a 32-21 lead with under five minutes remaining. The Cobras ended the half on a 4-0 run to cut the Milligan lead to 37-30 at the break.
 
   Jordan Cross (Bluff City, Tenn.) and Hendren led Milligan with eight points in the half, while Woods had seven points. As a team, Milligan was 14-of-29 (48%) from the field, and 5-of-9 (56%) from the arc. VI was 13-of-26 (50%) from the field and 2-of-7 (29%) from the 3-point line.
 
  Milligan started the second half with a 13-3 run to extend their lead 52-36 four minutes into the frame. Hendren hit back-to-back baskets to give the help the Buffaloes take a 61-40 lead with 12 minutes remaining, and maintained a 70-51 advantage at the midpoint of the half.
 
   Cross continued to stay hot as he drained three 3-pointers to help Milligan take a 78-52 lead with just over six minutes remaining. From there, the Buffaloes maintained their advantage to take the victory.
 
   Cross and Woods led Milligan with 17 points apiece. Tyler DeVault (Kingsport, Tenn.) had 14 points, while Hendren tallied 13 points. Torian Sitton (Hendersonville, N.C.) had 10 points. Marshall Hardy (Kingsport, Tenn.) led Milligan with seven rebounds.
 
   Justin Morris led Virginia Intermont with 17 points.
 
   As a team, Milligan was 36-of-63 (56%) from the floor and 13-of-23 (57%) from the 3-point line. VI was 28-of-32 (54%) from the field and 5-of-11 (46%) from behind the arc.
 
   With the win, Milligan improves to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while VI falls to 0-1 in AAC play and 5-3 overall.
 
   The Buffaloes return to action on Saturday, Dec. 3, when they travel to AAC foe Montreat College. Game time in Montreat, N.C., is set for 7:30 p.m.
