Lady Buffs Basketball tames Bryan

Milligan College, Tenn. (Feb. 5, 2011) --- The Milligan College women's basketball team picked up a AAC victory on Saturday afternoon as they defeated Bryan College 74-54 inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.

The Lady Buffs opened the game on a 9-1 run, with Heather Mandela (Fairfax, Va.) scoring six early points to pace the team. The Lady Lions roared back though and took a 15-14 lead with 11:15 left in the half. The Lions pushed the lead to three before Ashlee Price (Rogersville, Tenn.) sunk a three to tie the game at 17 with 9:26 left in the half.

The Lady Lions briefly regained the lead before the Lady Buffs closed the half on a 19-8 run to go into the locker-room at half leading 36-25. The Lady Buffs were lead by Jamiee Hill (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Price, who both scored seven points in the half.

In the second half, Milligan again came out strong pushing the lead up to 46-27 with 14:50 left in the game. The Lady Buffs opened up their first twenty-point lead on a three by Johneshia Good (Johnson City, Tenn.) as they led 51-29 with 13:10 left in the game.

The Lady Lions would cut the lead to 51-39 with eleven minutes remaining but Good responded with another three and the Lady Buffs implemented a shut down defense, holding the Lady Lions without a point for over four minutes while scoring in bunches of their own, leading by as much as twenty four during that stretch. The Lady Lions cut the lead to seventeen for a brief period late, but was not able to get any closer.

The Lady Buffs got a very balanced scoring attack throughout the game, with four players scoring in double figures. Mandela led the way with 13 points, Price scored 12, and both Good and Hill scored ten. Hill also had a game high in rebounds with six.

As a team, the Lady Buffs were 27-of-62 (43.5%) from the floor and 5-of-16 (31.3%) from behind the 3-point line. The Lady Lions were 18-of-57 (31.6%) from the field and 6-of-24 (25%) from behind the arc. The Lady Buffs shot 15-of-24 (62.5%) from the free throw line while Bryan shot 12-of-18 (66.7%).

With the win, the Lady Buffs move to 17-6 overall and 5-2 in the AAC.

Milligan returns to action on Wednesday when they host the Lady Cobras of Virginia Intermont at Steve Lacy Fieldhouse. Game time is set for 5:30.
