Milligan men's basketball holds off Cobras

Milligan College, Tenn. (Feb. 9, 2011) --- The Milligan College men's team kept pace in the AAC title race as they held off Virginia Intermont to take a 79-69 victory on Wednesday night inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse. The Buffaloes maintained their two-game advantage over Bryan in the AAC standings.

The start of the contest saw neither team able to get off to a fast start as the game was tied at five all five minutes into the game. After Bryant Edwards (Tabor City, N.C.) drained a 3-pointer to tie the game, a shot from Tim Harper (Catawba, N.C.) pushed the Buffaloes into a 17-16 lead at the midpoint of the half. The remainder of the half saw the teams trade shots as Milligan took a 32-29 lead into halftime.

The second half saw Milligan run out to a seven point lead, but the Cobras fought their way through the deficit. Hudson Fricke (Greeneville, S.C.) gave Milligan a 46-42 lead with 12 minutes remaining. After VI retook the lead, freshman Kyle Grisby (Charlotte, N.C.) drained back to back 3-pointers to give the Buffaloes a 63-58 lead with six minutes remaining. The Cobras slowly cut the lead, but the Buffaloes took full advantage of a technical foul called on VI to take a 71-62 lead with 2:53 left. The Cobras tried to make a late run, but were unsuccessful.

Grisby led the way with 17 points. Tyler DeVault (Kingsport, Tenn.) added 14 points, while Harper and Fricke had 10 points, apiece.

With the win, the Buffaloes improve to 14-10 overall and 10-1 in the AAC.

Milligan returns to action on Saturday when they host the Bulldogs of Union College at Steve Lacy Fieldhouse. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
