Milligan College, Tenn. (Feb. 9, 2011) --- The Milligan College women's basketball team picked up a key AAC victory on Wednesday night as they defeated Virginia Intermont 60-56 inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
The Buffaloes again came out of the gates hot as they led 6-2 after the first few minutes. Milligan continued to build the margin, leading by as many as seven in the first half before the Lady Cobras went on a 14-8 run to tie the game up at 23. The Lady Cobras then took the lead on two late free throws to go into halftime leading 25-23.
In the second half, Milligan came out slowly as they fell behind by as many as eight before revving up the full court press and clawing back into the game. After the Buffaloes took a 36-35 lead, the game seesawed back and forth until the Buffaloes took a 46-44 lead on a 3-pointer by
Ashlee Price (Rogersville, Tenn.). From there, Milligan never trailed again leading by seven before Intermont hit a 3-pointer at the end of the game to cut the score to its final margin.
Heather Mandela (Fairfax, Va.) led the Buffaloes with 20 points and 10 rebounds, recording her 17th double-double of the year.
Alisha Mainer (Flag Pond, Tenn.) added 12 points while both
Kayla Kelly (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Price scored seven.
As a team, the Lady Buffs were 19-of-38 (50%) from the floor and 4-of-9 (45%) from behind the 3-point line. The Lady Cobras were 22-of-48 (46%) from the field and 3-of-7 (43%) from behind the arc.
With the win, the Lady Buffs move to 19-8 overall and 7-4 in the AAC.
Milligan returns to action on Saturday when they host the Lady Bulldogs of Union College at Steve Lacy Fieldhouse. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
