Kingsport, Tenn. (Apr. 28, 2011) --- The Milligan College softball team advanced to the final day of the 2011 AAC softball tournament with a 10-1 victory over Union College on Thursday night at Domtar Park in Kingsport, Tenn. The win moves the Buffaloes into an 11 a.m., game against Montreat with a berth in the championship series on the line.
After a scoreless first inning, the Milligan bats came alive in the second inning. Abbey Hughes (Elizabethton, Tenn.),
Ellyn Sapp (Johnson City, Tenn.) and
Camille Olvey (Maryville, Tenn.) drove in a total of five runs. Sapp added two runs to the Milligan total in the third with a two-run homerun.
Milligan scored three more runs in the fourth when
Brittany DiRobbio (Oviedo, Fla.) drove in Olvey, and freshman
Krista Lambdin (Knoxville, Tenn.) hit a two-run shot to give Milligan a 10-0 lead. The Lady Bulldogs got a run in the bottom of the fourth when Fallon hit a solo shot, but that was the only run that Union would score.
Sidney Burns (Tallahassee, Fla.) picked up the win in the pitching circle as she allowed one run on three hits and struck out five Union batters. At the plate, Sapp was 2-for-2 with three RBIs, and Olvey was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Lambdin ended the night with a 2-for-3 performance, and she also had two RBIs.
With the win, Milligan improves to 31- 18 overall.
The Buffaloes return to action on Friday, April 29, when they square off against Montreat with the winner advancing to the championship series against Reinhardt. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m. at Domtar Park in Kingsport, Tenn.
