Milligan College, Tenn. (Apr. 3, 2011) --- The Milligan College softball team opened up the AAC portion of their schedule with a sweep of Bluefield College on Sunday afternoon at Anglin Field. The Buffaloes won the first game 8-0 in five innings, and held off a late Lady Ram charge to take a 11-5 victory in the second game.
In the first game, Milligan jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the end of the first inning. The Buffaloes kept adding to their advantage with two runs in the second and one in the third, fourth and fifth to take the victory.
In the pitching circle,
Sidney Burns (Tallahassee, Fla.) got the start and the win. In three innings of work, Burns did not give a hit and struck out five batters.
Brooke Ingle (Waynesville, N.C.) gave up one hit and recorded five strikeouts in two innings of relief.
At the plate,
Brittany DiRobbio (Oviedo, Fla.) was 4-for-4 with three RBIs.
Emily Biggs (Kingsport, Tenn.) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. As a team, Milligan combined for 13 hits.
In the second game, DiRobbio crossed the plate in the top of the first to put the Buffaloes up 1-0. Milligan added three runs in the second inning, and freshman
Krista Lambdin (Knoxville, Tenn.) hit a solo homerun to give the Buffaloes a 5-0 lead at the end of three innings.
In the fourth inning, Biggs and DiRobbio crossed the plate to extend Milligan's lead. The Lady Rams cut the lead to 7-5, but the Buffaloes scored four runs in the sixth to secure the win.
At the plate,
Jessica Fix (Chesapeake, Va.) was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while DiRobbio was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Biggs was 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Lambdin was 2-for-4 with a solo homerun.
Freshman
Chancli Connatser (Maryville, Tenn.) got the start and picked up the victory in the pitching circle. In five innings of work, she allowed four earned runs on seven hits and struck out eight batters. Burns picked up the save in two innings of work as she allowed just one hit.
With the pair of victories, Milligan improves to 18-11 overall and 2-0 in the AAC.
The Buffaloes return to action on Wednesday, April 6, when they travel to Barbourville, Ky., for an AAC matchup with Union College. The first pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
