Milligan College, Tenn. (Aug. 27, 2011) --- The Milligan College volleyball team came up short in two games on the second day of the Milligan Mountain Madness inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse. The Buffaloes fell in the day's opening game 3-0 to Freed-Hardeman, and lost 3-1 to Union University in the day's second game.
In the day's first game, Milligan made a late run in the first set, but was unable to take the lead as they fell 25-20 to the Lady Lions of Freed-Hardeman. The rest of the match saw the Buffaloes continue to fight hard, but they fell 25-16 and 25-15 in the second and third sets, respectively.
Chelsea Spivey (Gate City, Va.) recorded 15 assists, while senior
Morgan Rutledge (Kingsport, Tenn.) and freshman
Erin Pittman (Norris, Tenn.) had 18 and 14 digs, respectively.
Kendra Fiddler (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Pittman led Milligan in kills with five apiece. Fiddler also had four solo blocks.
In the second game, the Buffaloes rallied from an early deficit to take a 25-23 first set victory. However, Union responded with a 25-19 set victory in the second before taking the third by a score of 25-18. In the decisive fourth set, Milligan fought tough, but fell 25-12.
Rachel Renville (Broomfield, Colo.) and Fiddler recorded nine kills apiece, while Rutledge had 32 digs in the contest. Spivey ended the match with 32 assists and 10 digs.
Kylie Whaley (Maryville, Tenn.) recorded eight kills in the game.
Milligan moves to 1-3 on the season.
The Buffaloes return to action on Tuesday, Aug. 30, when they travel to Cleveland, Tenn., to face Lee University, who were ranked third nationally in the NAIA preseason poll. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
