Milligan women's soccer fall short in opener

Milligan College, Tenn. (Aug. 31, 2010) --- The Milligan College women's soccer team came up short in their 2011 season opener on Wednesday night as they fell 5-3 to Georgetown (Ky.) College at Anglin Field.

Milligan took the lead right out of the gate as Rachel Martin (Blountville, Tenn.) found the net with the assist of Grace Shawley (Mineral Springs, N.C.) in the third minute. Anna Ayers tied the game up for Georgetown in the 22nd minute, but Martin put the Buffaloes up 2-1 in the 35th minute. The Lady Tigers struck again in the 38th minute with a Liz Yoder goal to tie the game at two goals apiece heading into halftime.

The Buffaloes found themselves in the lead again shortly after the half as Samantha Barton (Marietta, Ga.) found the net off of a corner kick in the 59th minute. However, Georgetown tied the game in the 69th minute, and despite a hard fought Milligan effort, the Lady Tigers scored in the 80th and 88th to take the victory.

Defensively, Lauren McInturff (Kingsport, Tenn.) recorded six saves in the net.

“You can tell it was our season opener,” Head Coach Lisa Buckley said. “We did some good things, but I felt like we didn't do the small things well today which I felt really hurt us.”

The Buffaloes return to action on Saturday, Sept. 3, when they host nonconference foe Brenau University. Game time is set for 4 p.m., at Anglin Field.
