Buffaloes women's soccer knocks off Knights

Milligan College, Tenn. (Sept. 10, 2011) --- The Milligan College women's soccer team picked up their second straight nonconference victory as they knocked off Southern Virginia University 3-0 on Saturday night at Anglin Field.

The Buffaloes opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Samantha Barton (Marietta, Ga.) found the net with the assist of Gretchen Allie (Charlotte, N.C.). Milligan scored again in the 27th minute when Barton knocked in a pass from Grace Shawley (Mineral Springs, N.C.) to give the Buffaloes a 2-0 lead at the break.

The Milligan defense kept the pressure on the Knights in the second half, and Rachel Martin (Blountville, Tenn.) scored in the 69th minute to give Milligan extra breathing room.

Defensively, Lauren McInturff (Kingsport, Tenn.) recorded five saves in the net. As a team, Milligan outshot SVU 18-8.

“It is probably our best performance to date,” Head Coach Lisa Buckley said. “We are getting better and better and more organized. We are still missing a few key players, but other players are stepping up. I feel like this is a special team the way they do that.”

With the win, Milligan improves to 2-1-1 on the season.

The Buffaloes return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 13, when they travel to Williamsburg, Ky., for a nonconference game with the University of the Cumberlands. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
