Milligan women's soccer falls to Carson-Newman

Jefferson City, Tenn. (Sept. 21, 2011) --- The Milligan College women's soccer team saw a hard fought effort come up short on Wednesday night as they fell 3-1 to NCAA Division-II Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn.

The Buffaloes fell behind early when Maleya Garrison knocked a rebound in to put the Lady Eagles up 1-0 in the first minute. Rachel Martin (Blountville, Tenn.) tried to counter a minute later with her own shot, but it was turned away by Carson-Newman. Neither team was able to score for the remainder of the half as Milligan trailed 1-0 at halftime.

The second half saw the Lady Eagles score again in the 55th minute. The Buffaloes got on the board in the 80th minute when Grace Shawley (Mineral Springs, N.C.) took advantage of a free kick from 20-yards out. However, Milligan was unable to score again in the contest, and Carson Newman added another goal in the closing minutes to secure the win.

Defensively, Lauren McInturff (Kingsport, Tenn.) recorded nine saves in the game.

“We got off to a slow start tonight, and that really hurt us,” Head Coach Lisa Buckley said. “However, we started making progress and played better at the end. It was a higher tempo game then we have had. The most important part is that we left the field better then when we arrived, and I felt like we did that tonight.”

The loss drops Milligan to 3-3-1 on the season.

The Buffaloes return to action on Saturday, Sept. 24, when they host AAC rival Union College. Game time is set for 4 p.m., at Anglin Field.
