Martin kicks Milligan women's soccer past Union

Milligan College, Tenn. (Sept. 24, 2011) --- The Milligan College women's soccer team saw Rachel Martin (Blountville, Tenn.) score three goals in a 5-1 victory over AAC foe Union College on Saturday afternoon at Anglin Field.

Martin opened the scoring with a goal in the game's sixth minute off of an assist from Lauren Lamier (Woodstock, Ga.). Martin struck again just a minute later when she beat a pair of Union defenders and the keeper to put Milligan up 2-0. The Buffaloes got on the board again in the 25th minute when Martin drove past a Union defender to find the net. The Lady Bulldogs got on the board in the closing minutes of the half, but Milligan retained a 3-1 lead at the break.

Jacklyn Orange (Bagdad, Ky.) opened the scoring in the second half with a goal in the 49th minute. Sam Barton (Marietta, Ga.) put added another goal in the 80th minute to secure the victory for the Buffaloes.

Defensively, Lauren McInturff (Kingsport, Tenn.) recorded six saves.

“It was a good result,” Head Coach Lisa Buckley said. “It is nice to score five goals in a conference game. Rachel Martin in playing well for us right now, but more than anything it was a great team performance. When you are up 3-1 at halftime, it is easy to come out relaxed, but we didn't do that. It says a lot about our team.”

With the win, Milligan improves to 2-0 in AAC action and 4-3-1 overall.

The Buffaloes return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 27, when they travel to Mountain State University for a nonconference clash. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
