Buffaloes volleyball drops two games

Clearwater, Fla. (Sept. 2, 2011) --- The Milligan College volleyball team came up short in two games on Friday afternoon as they fell to Warner University and Trinity Christian College in the opening day of the Clearwater Christian Labor Day Classic in Clearwater, Fla. The Buffaloes fell 3-2 in the day's first game against Warner and dropped a 3-1 decision to Trinity.

The Buffaloes came out of the gate strong in the first match of the day against Warner as they stormed to a 21-25 and 25-18 set victories in the first and second set, respectively. However, the Royals would not be denied as they captured the next three sets 25-19, 25-22 and 15-10.

Against Warner, Chelsea Spivey (Gate City, Va.) recorded 47 assists, 12 digs and five kills. Kendra Fiddler (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had 15 kills, while Rachel Renville (Broomfield, Colo.) and Kylie Whaley (Maryville, Tenn.) had 13 kills apiece. Morgan Rutledge (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Erin Pittman (Norris, Tenn.) had 24 and 16 digs, respectively.

The second match of the day saw Trinity take a narrow 25-23 set victory in the opening second. Milligan bounced back in the second set as they took a 25-8 set victory, but was unable to hold on in the third set as Trinity took a 28-26 victory. In the decisive fourth set, the Buffaloes fought hard, but came up short as they fell 25-17.

Rutledge led the way with 21 digs, while Pittman record 12 digs. Fiddler and Renville had 13 and nine kills, respectively, and Fiddler also had four assisted blocks and one solo block. Spivey recorded 35 assists, 12 digs and five kills.

Milligan moves to 1-6 on the season.

The Buffaloes return to action on Saturday, Sept. 3, for the second day of the Clearwater Christian College Labor Day Classic. The Buffaloes will square off against host Clearwater Christian at 9:30 a.m., and College of St. Catherine at 1:30 p.m.
