Milligan volleyball stumbles against Montreat

Milligan College, Tenn. (Sept. 27, 2011) --- The Milligan College volleyball team came up short on Tuesday night as they fell 3-0 to AAC foe Montreat College inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.

Both teams remained even in the first set, but Montreat pulled away late to take a 25-19 victory. The second set saw Milligan jump out to an early lead, but they were unable to hold off a late Lady Cavaliers charge as they fell 25-23. The Buffaloes fought hard in the decisive third set but fell 25-11.

Chelsea Spivey (Gate City, Va.) recorded 20 assists and 16 digs, while Morgan Rutledge (Kingsport, Tenn.) had 22 digs. Kendra Fiddler (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Holly English (Kingsport, Tenn.) had nine and eight kills, respectively. English also had 12 digs on the night.

“Montreat came in very excited, and I don't think we ever matched their energy,” Head Coach Doneva Bays said. “We played pretty well in the first two sets, but we had a lot of unforced errors that cost us in the end.”

With the loss, Milligan drops to 6-11 overall and 4-3 in AAC action.

The Buffaloes return to action on Thursday, Sept. 29, when they host Bluefield College. Game time is slated for 6:30 p.m., inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
