Milligan volleyball picks up two wins

Laurinburg, N.C. (Oct. 20, 2012) --- The Milligan College volleyball team picked up two wins on Saturday morning in a tri-match with St. Andrews University and Winston Salem State in Laurinburg, N.C. The Buffaloes knocked off Appalachian Athletic Conference foe St. Andrews 3-0, and then swept past nonconference Winston Salem 3-0.

In the day's opening match, Milligan jumped out early against St. Andrews as they won the first set 3-0. The Buffaloes slowly pulled away to win the second set 25-17, and then secured the match with a 25-18 set victory.

Chelsea Spivey (Gate City, Va.) recorded 19 assists and five kills, and Jessica Davenport (Cleveland, Tenn.) had 14 assists. Kylie Whaley (Maryville, Tenn.) had 13 kills. Senior Katelin Henson (Kingsport, Tenn.) had a team high 11 digs, while Savannah Benton (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Rachel Renville (Broomfield, Colo.) had seven and five kills, respectively.

In the second match, Milligan cruised to a 25-10 opening set victory over Winston Salem. The Buffaloes continued to control the match as they won the second set 25-17. In the decisive third set, Milligan secured the match with a 25-16 set victory.

Henson led the way with 13 digs while Whaley had a team high eight kills. Kaitlyn Qualls (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had six digs, and Benton ended the match with five kills. Spivey had 23 assists.

With the pair of victories, Milligan improves to 17-11 overall and 11-2 in AAC action.

The Buffaloes return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 23, when they travel to AAC foe Montreat College. Match time is set for 6:30 p.m.
