Milligan baseball drops opening doubleheader

Beaufort, S.C. (Feb. 11, 2012) --- The Milligan College baseball team came up short in a nonconference doubleheader to University of South Carolina-Beaufort on Saturday in Beaufort, S.C. The Buffaloes saw a late rally fall short in the first game as they fell 9-6, and then they fell 6-2 in the day's second game.
 
   In the day's opening game, the Land Sharks jumped out quickly as they led 9-0 after three innings of play. The Buffaloes got on the board when Kyle Kolat (South Bend, Ind.) drove in Luke Kirk (Gate City, Va.) in the top of the fourth. The top of the seventh saw Wesley Jones (Kingsport, Tenn.) hit a double to drive in two runs, and then a Kolat triple drove Tyree Jefferies (Jackson, Tenn.), Kirk and Jones across home plate. However, the Buffaloes were unable to continue the rally in the inning.
 
   On the mound, Ethan Fleenor (Johnson City, Tenn.) was handed the loss. In nearly three innings of work, Fleenor gave up five hits. At the plate, Cory Hilton (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Kirk were both 2-for-4.
 
   The Buffaloes opened the second game with a run in the top of the first when Jefferies drove in Kirk with a triple. However, USC-Beaufort added two runs in the firstt and second inning to take the lead. Kolat crossed home plate in the top of the sixth off a Ryan White (Knoxville, Tenn.) hit, but the Buffaloes were unable to add additional runs.
 
   Freshman Nathan Millsap (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Hilton were both 1-for-3 to lead Milligan at the plate. Jake Watts (Boone, N.C.) was handed the loss on the mound as he gave up four earned runs on two hits.
 
   The Buffaloes and Land Sharks return to the diamond on Sunday, Feb. 12, for a nine inning contest. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
