Milligan baseball falls to No. 7 Cumberlands

Lebanon, Tenn. (Feb. 15, 2012) --- The Milligan College baseball team fell in two games during a nonconference doubleheader with No. 7 Cumberland (Tenn.) University on Wednesday afternoon in Lebanon, Tenn. The Buffaloes saw a late rally fall short as they fell 13-8, and then dropped the second game 5-2.
 
   In the first game, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 12-0 lead after three innings. Milligan broke onto the score board when Kyle Kolat (South Bend, Ind.) drove Luke Kirk (Gate City, Va.) across home plate in the top of the fourth. Joe Purus (Hudson, N.C.) was driven across the plate by Wesley Jones (Kingsport, Tenn.) in the top of the fifth, and then Kolat scored in the sixth. A Kirk double kicked off a five run seventh inning, but Milligan was unable to sustain the rally.
 
   Tyler Walker (Anaheim City, Calf.) was handed the loss on the mound. Walker allowed 11 runs on 12 hits. Cody Compton (Lebanon, Va.) pitched four innings of relief duty as he gave up two runs on four hits.
 
   At the plate, Kirk finished 2-for-4 and Jones was 2-for-5. Hunter Carpenter (Sneedville, Tenn.) recorded two RBIs.
 
   In the second game, Cumberlands jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four innings of play. The Buffaloes put two runs up when Cory Hilton (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Kirk scored off a Kolat single. However, the Buffaloes were unable to add anymore runs before the end of the contest.
 
   On the mound, Derek Long (Jackson, Tenn.) was handed the loss. In four innings of work, Long gave up four runs on eight hits and had four strikeouts.
 
   At the plate, Kolat was 1-for-2, while Kirk and Hilton were 1-for-3. Jones also added a hit for Milligan.
 
   The Buffaloes fall to 1-5 on the season.
 
   Milligan is slated to return to action on Saturday, Feb. 18, for their first home game of the season as Concordia (Mich.) University travels to Anglin Field. First pitch for the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
