Buffaloes baseball sweeps home opener

Milligan College, Tenn. (Feb. 17, 2012) --- The Milligan College baseball team picked up a sweep in their chilly home opening doubleheader against Concordia (Mich.) on Friday night at Anglin Field. The Buffaloes won the first game 10-1, and then picked up a 10-3 victory in the nightcap.

The Buffaloes saw Wesley Jones (Kingsport, Tenn.) cross the plate off a Luke Kirk (Gate City, Va.) single to open the scoring in the first inning. Joe Purus (Hudson, N.C.) and Jones crossed the plate, and then Hunter Carpenter (Sneedville, Tenn.) drove in Ryan White (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Purus to give the Buffaloes a 3-1 lead after three innings.

The Buffaloes added two more in the fourth to extend their advantage. Milligan capped off the game with three runs in the sixth.

On the mound, Ethan Fleenor (Johnson City, Tenn.) went the distance to get the win. Fleenor allowed just one run on two hits and recorded nine strikeouts.

At the plate, Kirk went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Carpenter ended the game 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Cory Hilton (Johnson City, Tenn.), White and Purus were all 2-for-4.

In the second game, the Buffaloes jumped out early and never looked back. After Jones tripled to lead off, the Buffaloes put six runs on the board in the bottom of the first. Kyle Kolat (South Bend, Ind.) and Purus scored off Cardinals' errors, and White scored off a Carpenter sacrifice fly as Milligan added three runs in the bottom of the second.

In the third, a Kolat double brought Hilton around the bases. Concordia scored a run in the top of the fourth and two more in the top of the sixth, but the Buffaloes held onto the win.

On the mound, freshman Jake Watts (Boone, N.C.) got the start and the win. In just over three innings pitched, Watts had just one unearned run and five strikeouts. Kolat was 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs. Jones, Carpenter and Hilton all recorded a hit.

With the sweep, Milligan improves to 3-5 overall.

The Buffaloes and Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Feb. 18, for another doubleheader. Game time at Anglin Field is set for 2 p.m.
