Milligan softball splits with Brevard

Milligan College, Tenn. (Feb. 21, 2011) --- The Milligan College softball team split a nonconference doubleheader with NCAA D-II Brevard College on Tuesday afternoon at Anglin Field. The Buffaloes saw a late rally fall short in the first game as they fell 8-7 in eight innings, while they bounced back to take a 7-2 victory in the day's final game.
 
   The first game of the day saw the Lady Tornadoes jump out a 5-0 lead after two innings. The Buffaloes were able to get the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, but was unable to get a run in after a double play by Brevard.
 
   After the Lady Tornado added another run in the top of the fourth, Krista Lambdin (Knoxville, Tenn.) hit a two-run homerun to put the Buffaloes on the board. Milligan closed the gap in the bottom of the sixth as Lambdin drove in Maleah Wolfenbarger (Knoxville, Tenn.), and then the Buffaloes put five three more runs on the board to tie the game entering the seventh.
 
   After neither team was able to get a run to cross the plate in the seventh, Brevard put two runs on the board in the top of the eighth. The Buffaloes got the game winning run on base, but was unable to convert as Brevard held on for the victory.
 
   At the plate, Camille Olvey (Maryville, Tenn.) and Lambdin ended the game 2-for-5 with three RBIs. On the mound, Chancli Connatser (Maryville, Tenn.) got the start in the pitching circle. In four innings of work, the sophomore gave up one earned run on eight hits. Freshman Samantha Mahala (Mountain City, Tenn.) was handed the loss in four innings of relief work. Mahala gave up on one earned run and had two strikeouts.
 
   In the second game of the day, Brittany DiRobbio (Ovieda, Fla.) and Olvey crossed the plate to give Milligan a 2-0 lead after one. Emily Biggs (Kingsport, Tenn.) hit a leadoff homerun in the bottom of the second to extend the Milligan lead, and then hit a triple to drive in two runs in the bottom of the third as the Buffaloes took a 6-0 lead into the fourth.
 
   The Buffaloes extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth as Wolfenbarger hit a solo homerun to propel Milligan to victory.
 
   In the pitching circle, Sierra Plese (Knoxville, Tenn.) got the starting nod and picked up the win. In six innings of work, Plese gave up two runs on five hits. Biggs and Olvey ended the game 2-for-3 at the plate with three and two RBIs, respectively, while Megan Nicol (Surry, British Columbia) was 2-for-2.
 
   With the split, the Buffaloes move to 3-5 overall.
 
   Milligan returns to action on Friday, Feb. 24, when they travel to the Mid South Arctic Blast in Decatur, Ga. The Buffaloes will square off against Shorter University at 2 p.m., and then Lee University at 6 p.m.
