Buffaloes baseball splits with UVA-Wise

Milligan College, Tenn. (Feb. 23, 2012) --- The Milligan College baseball team split a nonconference doubleheader on Thursday night with UVA-Wise. The Buffaloes fell 6-2 in the day's first game, and then put six runs on the board in sixth inning to take the nightcap 8-2.

After UVA-Wise put two runs on the board to open the game, the Buffaloes responded with a run of their own when Wesley Jones (Kingsport, Tenn.) crossed the plate off a Corey Hilton (Johnson City, Tenn.) single. Milligan answered two more Cavalier runs in the third when Luke Kirk (Gate City, Va.) drove Jones across the plate. However, Milligan was unable to get back in front as UVA-Wise added another pair of runs in the seventh inning.

At the plate, Hilton led the way as he was 2-for-2, while Nathan Milsap (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Jones were 1-for-2. Joe Purus (Hudson, N.C.) were 1-for-3 and Kirk were 1-for-3.

On the mound, Ethan Fleenor (Johnson City, Tenn.) got the starting nod, but was handed the loss. Fleenor gave up seven hits and four earned runs with seven strikeouts.

In the second game, the Cavaliers opened the scoring as they put two runs on the board in the top of the first. The Buffaloes answered when Purus hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the second, and then tied the game in the fifth when freshman Nathan Millsap (Kingsport, Tenn.) hit a double to drive in Purus. Milligan took their first lead of the game and secured the victory as they put six runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth.

Millsap lead the Buffaloes at the plate as he was 2-for-3. Malone ended the game 1-for-3 with three RBIs, while Jones added two RBIs. On the mound, Jake Watts (Boone, N.C.) picked up the win in the start. In six innings of work, Watts gave up just two runs on five hits.

With the split, Milligan improves to 4-7 overall.
