Milligan softball upsets No. 9 Shorter, falls to Lee

Decatur, Al. (Feb. 24, 2012) --- The Milligan College softball team used a four run fourth inning to upset No. 9 Shorter (Ga.) University 5-4 in the Mid-South Arctic Blast in Decatur, Al. The Buffaloes were unable to win their second game of the day as they fell 13-1 to Lee (Tenn.) University in the nightcap.
 
   In the day's first game, Shorter opened the game by putting a run on the board in the first and the top of the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fourth, the Buffaloes responded as Sarah Arrowood (Asheville, N.C.) drove Camille Olvey (Maryville, Tenn.) across home plate. Milligan put two more runs on the board in the inning off a Sierra Plese (Knoxville, Tenn.) double. The Eagles added two more runs in the top of the seventh, but the Buffaloes held on for the victory.
 
   In the pitching circle, Chancli Connatser (Maryville, Tenn.) picked up the win. The sophomore pitched a complete game as she allowed four runs on eight hits. She also struck out five Shorter batters.
 
   At the plate, Arrowood was 2-for-3 to lead the way. Emily Biggs (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Plese were both 1-for-2 batting.
 
   In the nightcap, the Buffaloes jumped out early as Krista Lambdin (Knoxville, Tenn.) hit a single to drive Olvey across home plate. However, Milligan was unable to keep pace with the Flames, who received votes in the national poll, as Lee pulled away with eight runs in the fourth inning.
 
   Lambdin ended the game 2-for-3 at the plate, while Maleah Wolfenbarger (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Arrowood were 1-for-2. Freshman Samantha Mahala (Mountain City, Tenn.) was handed the loss in the pitching circle. Mahala allowed four earned runs on nine hits.

   Milligan returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 25, as they wrap up the Mid-South Arctic Blast. The Buffaloes will square off against Indiana University-Southeast at 10 a.m., and then wrap up the day with Martin Methodist College at 12 p.m.
