Milligan softball splits with AAC foe Union

Milligan College, Tenn. (March 29, 2012) --- The Milligan College softball team saw a late rally fall short, but battled back to pick up a split with AAC foe Union (Ky.) College on Thursday afternoon at Anglin Field. The Buffaloes rallied back from a 10-run deficit in the first game but fell 13-8, and then captured a 4-0 win in the day's second game.

In the first game, the Lady Bulldogs offense came out of the gate on fire as they put five runs on the board in the second and third innings. The Buffaloes, however, fought back as Maleah Wolfenbarger (Knoxville, Tenn.) drove in two runs and then Emily Biggs (Kingsport, Tenn.) hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth.

Freshman Sarah Arrowood (Asheville, N.C.) continued the Milligan rally in the bottom of the fifth as she hit her first career grand slam as the Buffaloes closed the gap to 10-8. However, that was as close as she could get as the Lady Bulldogs added three runs in the eighth to preserve the victory.

Arrowood led the way as she went 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Wolfenbarger and Biggs were both also 2-for-4 with two RBIs apiece.

In the pitching circle, Chancli Connatser (Maryville, Tenn.) was handed the loss. Connatser allowed five runs, one of which was earned, on three hits. Sierra Plese (Knoxville, Tenn.) pitched four innings of work and allowed three runs on seven hits, while Samantha Mahala (Mountain City, Tenn.) also pitched an inning in the game.

In the second game, Milligan put four runs in the board in the first inning and that was all they needed as they kept the Lady Bulldogs off the scoreboard. Milligan saw Biggs drive in Brittany DiRobbio (Oviedo, Fla.) and Arrowood, and Connatser used a double to bring Wolfenbarger and Biggs across home plate.

Connatser picked up in the win in a complete game effort. She gave up just three hits and struck out eight batters.

Biggs led the way with a 2-for-3 performance with two RBIs. DiRobbio ended the game 1-for-3.

The split moves Milligan to 21-13 overall and 8-2 in AAC action.

The Buffaloes return to action on Friday, March 30, when they host AAC newcomer Point University. Game time is slated for 2 p.m., at Anglin Field.
