Milligan softball sweeps Reinhardt for share of AAC title

Milligan College, Tenn. (April 20, 2012) --- The Milligan College softball team claimed a share of the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season title with a sweep of Reinhardt University on Friday afternoon at Anglin Field. The Buffaloes finished the season tied with Tennessee Wesleyan and Reinhardt, and it is Milligan's first share of the title since they won it outright in 2009.

The Buffaloes pulled away late to take a 4-1 win in the first game, and then kept the Lady Eagles scoreless in the second to take a 2-0 victory.

After Reinhardt scored a run to open the first game, the Buffaloes saw Sarah Arrowood (Asheville, N.C.) drive in Camille Olvey (Maryville, Tenn.) and Krista Lambdin (Knoxville, Tenn.) with a double to take a 2-1 lead after the first inning. The next two innings saw neither team able to get a run across the plate.

The Buffaloes held the Lady Eagles off the board, and Maleah Wolfenbarger (Knoxville, Tenn.) scored on a Mackenzie Lilley (Kingsport, Tenn.) sacrifice fly. After a scoreless fifth inning, Emily Biggs (Kingsport, Tenn.) added another run with a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth. Reinhardt got a runner on the bases in the top of the seventh, but Milligan stopped any thought of a rally.

Olvey and Wolfenbarger finished the game 1-for-2. Arrowood was 1-for-2 with two RBIs, while Biggs was 1-for-3 with one RBI. Chancli Connatser (Maryville, Tenn.) picked up in the win in the pitching circle. In a complete game effort, Connaster allowed just one run on five hits.

After the Buffaloes kept Reinhardt off the board in the first frame to open the second game, the Buffaloes scored when Lambdin drove Olvey across home plate with an RBI single. The second and third innings went scoreless as Milligan maintained a run advantage after three innings of play.

Reinhardt got two runners on the bases in the top of the fourth, but was unable to get a run across home plate. The Buffaloes, however, scored their second run of the game in the frame as Wolfenbarger drove in Lambin. That would be all they needed as they held on to take the victory.

Connatser picked up her second win of the day with another complete game effort. The sophomore gave up just two hits and had four strikeouts. At the plate, Olvey, Lambdin, Arrowood and Wolfenbarger were all 1-for-2, while Abby Hughes (Rogersville, Tenn.) finished 1-for-1.

With the sweep, Milligan improves to 27-19 overall and 14-4 in AAC action.

The Buffaloes will return to action on Tuesday, April 24, with first round play of the AAC tournament. Brackets for the 2012 AAC Tournament will be announced later in the weekend.
