Buffaloes softball splits on opening day of Smash Hit tournament

Beaufort, S.C. (March 5, 2012) --- The Milligan College softball team split on their first day of action at the 2012 Smash Hit Tournament hosted by USC-Beaufort in Beaufort, S.C., on Monday afternoon. The Buffaloes fell to Findley (Ohio) University 1-0 in eight innings, but knocked off Malone University 8-5 in eight innings in the nightcap.
 
   In the first game, Milligan was unable to get a run across the board as Findley put their lone run on the board in the bottom of the eighth. Chancli Connatser (Maryville, Tenn.) held Findley scoreless for much of the game before being handed the loss. Connatser allowed just one run on two hits and recorded 10 strikeouts.
 
   At the plate, Krista Lambdin (Knoxville, Tenn.) was 1-for-2. Brittany DiRobbio (Oviedo, Fla.) was 1-for-3.
 
   In the second game, the Buffaloes jumped out early as Camille Olvey (Maryville, Tenn.) and DiRobbio crossed the plate in the opening inning to give Milligan a 2-0 lead. Malone tied the game in the bottom of the third, but the Buffaloes responded with an Olvey homerun and a DiRobbio run.
 
   After Malone forced extra innings with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, Emily Biggs (Kingsport, Tenn.) hit a three run homerun to send the Buffaloes to the win.
 
   On the mound, Samantha Mahala (Mountain City, Tenn.) got the win in the pitching circle as she allowed just two runs on two hits. Lambdin and DiRobbio led the way at the plate as they were both 3-for-5. Olvey and Connatser were 2-for-4.
 
   Milligan moves to 7-9 overall.
 
   The Buffaloes return to action on Tuesday, March 6, for the second day of the Boombah Smash Hit Tournament. Milligan will have a rematch with Findley at 2 p.m., before squaring off against Brewton-Parker at 6 p.m.
