Milligan baseball knocks off Reinhardt

Milligan College, Tenn. (April 6, 2012) --- The Milligan College baseball team picked up a 6-3 AAC victory over Reinhardt University on Friday night at Anglin Field.

After the Eagles went three up and down to open the game, Wesley Jones (Kingsport, Tenn.) got the first hit of the game, but the Buffaloes were unable to get anyone else on the bases. The Milligan defense forced another three and out in the top of the second. Tyree Jefferies (Jackson, Tenn.) and Brandon Malone (Maryville, Tenn.) recorded singles in the bottom of the frame, but the inning ended scoreless.

The third inning saw the Buffaloes get on the board when Cory Hilton (Johnson City, Tenn.) drove in Luke Kirk (Gate City, Va.) and Jones to take a 2-0 lead. Neither team could get a man aboard the bases in the fourth, and both frames of the fifth ended on double plays.

Reinhardt opened the sixth inning with two singles that sparked them to tie the game at two all. However, the Buffaloes responded with three consecutive doubles as Kyle Kolat (South Bend, Ind.), Joe Purus (Hudson, N.C.) and Jefferies all crossed the plate. After a scoreless seventh inning and top of the eight, Malone drove Purus across the home plate for an insurance run.

On the mound, Sean Robinson (Knoxville, Tenn.) picked up the win. In six innings of work, Robinson allowed two runs on six hits.

At the plate, Malone was 3-for-4, while Kirk went 2-for-3. Jefferies ended the night 2-for-4.

With the win, Milligan improves to 9-7 in conference action and 20-20 overall.

The Buffaloes and Eagles return to action on Saturday, April 7, for the doubleheader of the series. Game time at Anglin Field is slated for 1 p.m.
