Buffaloes baseball splits with Reinhardt in AAC DH

Milligan College, Tenn. (April 7, 2012) --- The Milligan College baseball captured the series against Reinhardt University with a split on Saturday afternoon at Anglin Field. The Buffaloes, who won Friday night's nine-inning game, fell 7-3 in the day's opening game, but held onto to take a 3-1 victory.
 
   The Buffaloes retired the Eagles in order to open the first game of the day. Luke Kirk (Gate City, Va.) and Cory Hilton (Johnson City, Tenn.) hit singles to get on base for Milligan in the bottom of the first, but a double play ended the inning before they could score. Reinhardt took advantage of three Milligan errors in the bottom of the second as they took a 4-0 lead.
 
   The Buffaloes tried to respond in the home side of the frame as they got runners on second and third, but was unable to break onto the scoreboard. After keeping the Eagles scoreless to start the third, Kirk scored on a Joe Purus (Hudson, N.C.) sacrifice hit and Tyree Jefferies (Jackson, Tenn.) drove in Hilton with a RBI double. Purus ended the scoring in the inning as he stole home plate as Milligan closed the gap to 4-3.
 
   The Eagles widened their gap with a run in the fourth and two more in the seventh. The Buffaloes got the game tying runner to bat in the bottom of the seventh, but was unable to score a run to close the gap.
 
   Ethan Fleenor (Johnson City, Tenn.) was handed the loss on the mound. In four innings of work, he allowed three runs on eight hits and had four strikeouts.
 
   At the plate, Kirk and Purus were both 2-for-4. Hilton ended the game 1-for-3, while Jones finished 1-for-4.
 
   In the second game, Reinhardt opened the game with a run in the opening frame, but the Buffaloes responded as Wesley Jones (Kingsport, Tenn.) scored on a Kyle Kolat (South Bend, Ind.) single and Kirk scored on a Jefferies sacrifice fly.
 
   The Eagles went three up and three down in the visiting side of the second. The Buffaloes added a run to their lead in the bottom half of the frame when Taylor Valentine (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored off a sacrifice fly by Jones. Neither team was able to get anything going in the rest of the game as the Buffaloes held on for the victory.
 
   Jones ended the game 1-for-1 at the plate, while Valentine was 1-for-2. Kirk and Kolat both finished the game 1-for-3.
 
   Freshman Jake Watts (Boone, N.C.) picked up his fourth win of the year on the mound. In four innings of work, Watts allowed just one run on five hits with five strikeouts.
 
   With the split, Milligan moves to 21-21 overall and 10-8 in conference play.
 
   The Buffaloes return to action on Tuesday, April 10, when they host nonconference foe Emory and Henry. Game time at Anglin Field is slated for 6 p.m.
