Milligan women's soccer wins thriller in season opener

Milligan College, Tenn. (Aug. 24, 2012) --- The Milligan College women's soccer team scored in the 108th minute to take a 1-0 victory in their 2012 season opener against Emmanuel College at Anglin Field on Friday night.

The Buffaloes were unable to take advantage of early shots by Ellory Allonier (High Point, N.C.). Milligan continued to push the ball up field after a 30-minute lightning delay at the 17th minute, but neither team was able to score before the end of the half.

Play remained physical to open the second half as neither team was able to break onto the scoreboard. The Buffaloes nearly broke onto the board in the final 10 minutes as Teagan Wood (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Lindsey Ogle (Morristown, Tenn.) saw shots saved by the Emmanuel keeper.

In the first overtime, the Buffaloes nearly broke onto the board when Wood broke free from the defender, and then on the ensuing corner kick by Sam Barton (Marietta, Ga.). After the Buffaloes defense kept the Lady Lions from scoring on a corner, freshman Caroline Gill (Stafford, Va.) scored off a Wood assist to secure the win for Milligan

“It was a good way to start the season,” Head Coach Lisa Buckley said. “We are not clinically finishing, but we are creating opportunities and the rest will come. I could not ask for more from our players, and I am really excited about this team.”

The Buffaloes return to action on Tuesday, Aug. 28, when they host Appalachian Athletic Conference newcomer St. Andrews. Match time at Anglin Field is slated for 2 p.m.
