Milligan women's soccer edged by Carson-Newman

Milligan College, Tenn. (Sept. 5, 2012) --- The Milligan College women's soccer team was unable to answer a late goal as they fell 2-1 to NCAA Division II Carson-Newman College on Wednesday night at Anglin Field.

In the first half, Milligan broke onto the board first when Teagan Wood (Kingsport, Tenn.) beat the Lady Eagles keeper in the 18th minute. However, Carson-Newman evened the game in 23rd minute when Bianca Hall found the net. Neither team could score again before the end of the first half as the game remained tied at one at the break.

The second half saw both teams continue to battle. The Lady Eagles saw Hall score her second goal of the game to take a 2-1 lead in the 60th minute. Milligan continued to push the ball, but was unable to capitalize on opportunities from Grace Shawley (Mineral Springs, N.C.) and Wood in the final 10 minutes.

Defensively, Lauren McInturff (Kingsport, Tenn.) recorded four saves in the net.

“I was proud of the way we battled tonight,” Head Coach Lisa Buckley said. “Our team was little bit unlucky tonight, but it is nice to know we can compete with this level of a team. That kind of work will show up later in the season.”

With the loss, Milligan falls to 2-2-1 on the season.

The Buffaloes return to action on Saturday, Sept. 8, when they travel to nonconference foe Southern Wesleyan University. Match time in Central, S.C., is slated for 5 p.m.
