Milligan volleyball picks up AAC victory

Milligan College, Tenn. (Sept. 21, 2012) --- The Milligan College volleyball team picked up a 3-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory over Columbia College on Friday night inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
 
   Milligan jumped out to an early lead and maintained it throughout the match as they won the first set of the night by a score of 25-21. In the second set, the Buffaloes led by four midway through, but Columbia rallied to tie the match at 24. However, Milligan answered with two straight points as a kill from Kylie Whaley (Maryville, Tenn.) gave the Buffaloes a 26-24 victory in the set.
 
   The Buffaloes raced out to a 7-3 lead to open the third set, and extended the lead to 14-7 midway through the set. After Columbia cut the gap to three points, the Buffaloes hung on to take a 25-21 set victory to take the match.
 
   Whaley led the way with 14 kills, while Rachel Renville (Broomfield, Colo.) recorded eight kills. Senior Holly English (Kingsport, Tenn.) had seven digs and six kills, while Kaitlyn Qualls (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Emilee Linkous (Morristown, Tenn.) had seven digs and five kills, respectively. Chelsea Spivey (Gate City, Va.) ended the match with 32 assists.
 
   With the win, Milligan improves to 8-5 overall and 4-0 in AAC action.
 
   The Buffaloes return to action on Saturday, Sept. 22, when they host St. Andrews University and Lindsey Wilson College for a tri-match. Milligan opens the day with a conference match against St. Andrews, and will close the day in a nonconference clash with Lindsey Wilson at 3 p.m.
