Milligan volleyball splits pair of Saturday games

Milligan College, Tenn. (Sept. 22, 2012) --- The Milligan College volleyball team split a pair of games inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon. The Buffaloes remained undefeated in Appalachian Athletic Conference action with a 3-0 victory over St. Andrews University, but fell 3-0 to Lindsey Wilson College in the final nonconference game of the day.
 
   In the first game of the day, the Buffaloes dispatched St. Andrews University 3-0. Milligan jumped out to an 11-3 lead, and then held off a late St. Andrews charge to take the first set by a score of 25-19. The second set was an even match until the Buffaloes closed the frame out with a 7-1 run to take the set 25-19. The decisive third set saw neither team able to pull away and Milligan scored two late points to take a 27-25 set victory.
 
   Holly English (Kingsport, Tenn.) had 14 kills and six digs. Kylie Whaley (Maryville, Tenn.) had 11 kills, while Katelin Henson (Kingsport, Tenn.) had a team high 13 digs. Chelsea Spivey (Gate City, Va.) and Jessica Davenport (Cleveland, Tenn.) had 20 and 14 assists, respectively.
 
   In the final match of the day, the Buffaloes rallied from an early deficit to pull within one point, but the Blue Raiders captured the first set 25-18. Milligan was unable to respond to a late Lindsey Wilson run in the second set as they fell 25-17. The Buffaloes and Blue Raiders stayed within a point of each other for much of the third and final set, but Lindsey Wilson pulled away late to take a 25-20 victory.
 
   Spivey recorded 28 assists in the game, while English recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. Rachel Renville (Broomfield, Colo.) had 12 kills, while Henson had 13 digs. Kaitlyn Qualls (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had nine digs in the game.
 
   Milligan moves to 9-6 overall and improved to 6-0 in conference play.
 
   The Buffaloes return to action on Monday, Sept. 24, when they travel to former AAC foe UVA-Wise. Match time in Wise, Va., is slated for 6:30 p.m.
