Good's career night leads Milligan past VI

Milligan College, Tenn. (Jan. 23, 2013) --- Johneshia Good (Johnson City, Tenn.) scored a career high 32 points to lead the Milligan College women's basketball team to a 63-54 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory over Virginia Intermont on Wednesday night inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
 
   Dorian Freeman (Augusta, Ga.) opened the scoring for the Buffaloes, and Milligan used three points from Tracy Hardiman (Maryville, Tenn.) to take a 7-3 lead five minutes into the game. The Buffaloes pulled out to a 12-5 advantage with back-to-back baskets from Kayla Kelly (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Good. However, the Lady Cobras battled back to take a 15-14 lead midway through the half.
 
   Milligan edged out back into the lead with a pair of free throws from Good, but VI went on a 5-0 run to regain the advantage. Good struck again for the Buffaloes with a 3-point play to tie the game at 20-20 with 5:33 to play. That sparked a 14-0 over the next three minutes Milligan run capped by buckets from Freeman and Good. Kelly closed the half with a jumper as time expired to give the Buffaloes a 32-22 lead at the half.
 
   Good led the way with 14 points in the half, while Freeman ended the half with nine points. As a team, the Buffaloes finished the half 10-of-27 (37%) from the floor and 3-of-11 (27%) from behind the 3-point line. The Lady Cobras were 9-of-26 (35%) from the field and 1-of-6 (17%) from behind the arc.
 
   The second half saw VI pull within five points in the first seven minutes until Chelsey Weddle (Hampton, Tenn.) hit Milligan's first field goal of the half with 13:31 remaining. The Weddle jumper sparked an 11-0 run for the Buffaloes capped off by four straight points from Good, and a Callie Cox (Knoxville, Tenn.) 3-pointer pushed the Milligan lead to 47-33 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game.
 
   The Lady Cobras closed the gap with an 18-3 run as they pulled within one point with 5:25 left in the game. Milligan responded with a 3-pointer from Good and a jumper from Kelly before VI closed the gap back to two points. However, Good drained another 3-pointer and hit two free throws to extend the Milligan lead with 1:31 left in the game. From there, Good secured the win from the free throw line for the Buffaloes.
 
   Good's 32 points and nine rebounds led the way for the Buffaloes. Freeman ended the game with 10 points, while Kelly finished with eight points.  
 
   As a team, the Buffaloes finished the game 16-of-58 (28%) from the field and 7-of-22 (32%) from behind the 3-point line. VI ended the game 21-of-62 (34%) from the floor and 2-of-12 (17%) from behind the arc.
 
   With the win, Milligan improves to 16-7 overall and 9-1 in AAC action, while VI falls to 9-13 overall and 4-6 in conference play.
 
   The Buffaloes return to action on Saturday, Jan. 26, as they travel to conference foe Montreat College. Game time in Montreat, N.C., is slated for 5:30 p.m.
