Milligan volleyball captures third straight win

Milligan College, Tenn. (Oct. 25, 2013) -  The Milligan Women's Volleyball team rallied an Appalachian Athletic Conference win against Point University, 3-0, in the Steve Lacey Fieldhouse.

The Buffaloes and the Skyhawks battled back-and-forth throughout the first set keeping the game within one point. Towards the middle of the set, a couple of Milligan kills would give the Buffaloes the lead at 18-12. The Skyhawks would be unable to close the gap and would fall 25-16.

The second set seemed to mirror the first.  The Buffaloes would, again, jump to a six-point lead in the middle of the set 18-12. However, a few Milligan errors and Skyhawk kills would bring the game within four points at 20-16. The Buffaloes' offense took over scoring the next five points in a row, ending the match 25-16.

The Skyhawks would steal some of the Buffaloes' momentum in the third set as they forced the game to go into extra points. However, the Buffaloes would hold on defensively and senior, Kylie Whaley (Maryville, Tenn.) would finish the game with one of her 13 kills on the night.

Along with Whaley's 13 kills, Samantha Bruinius (Tinley Park, IL) would earn six kills and 18 digs. Emily Linkous (Morristown, Tenn.), a sophomore, picked up nine kills on the night and Jessica Davenport (Cleveland, Tenn.) gave 31 assists. Kaitlyn Round (Billings, MT) recorded nine digs, bringing her season total to 443.

Head Coach Doneva Bays commented on the night's win saying, "I was really happy to see a good crowd show up for the girls. They played hard and are staying focused now that it's getting closer to tournament time. Of course, it's always nice to get a win during homecoming."

After the night's win, the Buffaloes' record comes to 13-18 overall while improving to 8-8 in the conference.

Their next game will be Tuesday, Oct. 29, as they host the Bulldogs of Union College inside the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
