Lady Buffaloes unable to rally on senior night

Milligan College, Tenn. (Nov. 1, 2013) â€" The Milligan College women's volleyball team fell 3-0 in tonight's senior night match-up against AAC rival Columbia College.
 
The Lady Buffaloes started the first set with the lead at 10-5 after several errors by the Koalas. However, Milligan would succumb to the same issue committing five errors bringing the score to within one at 11-10.  The two teams battled for the remainder of the set adding kills on both sides of the net. Even with 15 Buffalo kills in the first set Milligan struggled to hold off a late rally by the Koalas and fell 28-26.
 
Senior Kylinn Brenden (Billings, MT) started off the second set with one of her seven kills on the night leading Milligan off to its initial 7-1 lead. The Koalas would answer by scoring five unanswered points bringing the score within two at 7-5. Later in the set the score would be tied at 17-17. Milligan jumped ahead with three kills by senior Kylie Whaley (Maryville, Tenn.) bringing the score to 21-17. However, the Buffaloes were unable to close out the match as they allowed Columbia to go on a six point run finishing the set 25-22.
 
The Buffaloes started their third set trailing 7-1. Towards the middle of the set, The Koalas would extend their lead 18-9 forcing the Buffaloes into a time out. Although Milligan was able to rally a six-point run late in the set to bring the score to 16-22, they would be unable to hold off Columbia's offensive attack falling short 25-17 giving Columbia the win.
 
"Columbia played a nice match with fewer errors which gave them the win," commented Head Coach Doneva Bays. "I was pleased with our energy and I think our seniors played really well but unfortunately we couldn't pull out the win. Hopefully we will regroup and come ready to get two wins tomorrow. "
 
On the night, the Buffaloes hitting game was led by Whaley at 12 kills followed by Samantha Bruinius (Tinley Park, IL) at 11 kills. Brenden tallied seven kills on the night assisted by Jessica Davenport (Cleveland, Tenn.) who recorded 32 assists. Defensively, Kaitlin Round (Billings, MT) earned 15 digs followed by Grace Ann Moorhouse (Morristown, Tenn.) with 13 digs and Heather Harvey (Kingsport, Tenn.) who recorded 11 digs.
 
The Buffaloes will host a double header on Saturday, Nov. 2, as they host St. Andrews University and Brenau University. Game times are set for 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
