Milligan College, Tenn. (Nov. 15, 2013) â€" The Milligan College women's basketball team dropped their first game of the Milligan Classic against NAIA Division 1 rival Carroll College 76-60.
The Buffaloes fell to an early 9-3 deficit after a few Milligan turnovers. However, Milligan's
Kayla Kelly (Chattanooga, Tenn.) would drain a three-pointer and
Robyn Anthony (Chattanooga, Tenn.) would make two free throws to bring the game back within one at 9-8. Carroll would eventually gain an 11 point lead of 25-14 in the middle of the half but Milligan would fight to cut into the Saints' lead but be unable to find a way seeing Carroll to its largest lead of the half of 15 points with the Buffaloes trailing 37-22. Milligan would enter the half trailing by 8, 37-29.
Milligan struggled for the remainder of the game to find an answer to the offensive pressure created by the Saints. The Buffaloes would trail by 13, at the 10-minute mark, 58-45. Milligan did a good job at getting open and finding shots late in the half but just couldn't find the bottom of the net. A five-point Carroll run in the remaining seconds would keep the Buffaloes from tying the game and the Saints would take the win 76-60.
Allison Jones (Morristown, Va.) led the Buffaloes' scoring with 18 points for the night and two steals as well as Kelly, who scored 16 points.
Hayley Wyrick (Coeburn, Va.) recorded eight rebounds, seven points and three assists.
Milligan will return to action Saturday, Nov. 16, as they host Selma University in their second game of the Milligan Classic. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
