ST. CATHARINE, Ky. (Dec. 14, 2013) â€" It was another career day for freshman
Hayley Wyrick (Coeburn, Va.) as the Milligan Lady Buffaloes defeated St. Catherine College on the road, 83-76, Saturday afternoon in nonconference action.
ÂÂ
With the victory, Milligan (8-4, 4-2 AAC) avenged a 65-57 home loss to the Lady Patriots back on Dec. 2.ÂÂ
ÂÂ
Wyrick matched her career high of 26 points (Nov. 11 vs. Selma University) and added six rebounds and four steals to put Milligan back on the winning track.ÂÂ
ÂÂ
Milligan trailed by as many as 11 (twice) in the early going but used a 20-9 run over a seven-minute stretch beginning late in the first half to set the stage for an exciting finish.
ÂÂ
After swapping leads for the bulk of the second half, Wyrick's bucket at the 2:44 mark put the Lady Buffaloes on top for good.ÂÂ
ÂÂ
"This was a really big win for our team," said Head Coach
Rich Aubrey after the victory. "St. Catharine played extremely well in the first half, but we weathered the storm. A great second half effort got us over the top."
ÂÂ
Milligan outscored the Lady Patriots 43-30 in the second half and 14-6 over the final three minutes.
ÂÂ
Wyrick was joined by four other Lady Buffaloes in double figures, including senior
Kayla Kelly (Chattanooga, Tenn.) who finished with 19 points and nine rebounds.ÂÂ
ÂÂ
Sophomore
Allison Jones (Morgantown, N.C.) scored 15 points while
Chelsey Weddle (Hampton, Tenn.) and
Lindsee Price (Rogersville, Tenn.) had 10 apiece.ÂÂ
ÂÂ
St. Catharine's Rianne Hofstraat led all scorers while registering a triple-double of 36 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 blocks.
ÂÂ
Milligan women's basketball will continue its road trip at Cumberland University (Lebanon, Tenn.) Monday at 7 p.m. The Lady Buffaloes will return home to Steve Lacy Fieldhouse Jan. 4 for a conference matchup against Reinhardt University.
