Milligan softball splits with Brevard

Brevard, N.C. (Feb. 15, 2013) --- The Milligan College softball team picked up their first win of the season as they split a nonconference doubleheader with NCAA D-II Brevard College on Friday afternoon in Brevard, N.C. The Buffaloes held off a late charge to take a 4-3 victory in the first game of the day, but fell 3-1 in extra innings in the second game.

The first game saw the first three innings of the game remain scoreless before Brevard took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. The Buffaloes answered in the top of the fifth inning as Jessica Wheelock (Gray, Tenn.) scored on an Emily Biggs (Kingsport, Tenn.) double to tie the game. Milligan kept the inning going as Camille Olvey (Maryville, Tenn.) and Biggs scored to give the Buffaloes a 3-1 lead headed into the sixth inning.

Brevard closed the gap with a run of their own in the home side of the sixth inning, but Sarah Arrowood (Asheville, N.C.) hit a double that drove Wheelock across home plate to extend the Milligan lead. The Tornadoes put runners in scoring position in the final half inning, but the Buffaloes limited Brevard to one run to secure the victory.

However, Brevard captured the victory with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the eighth.

Chancli Connatser (Maryville, Tenn.) was handed the loss in the pitching circle as she allowed just two earned runs on eight hits. Biggs was 1-for-3 at the plate.
