Waleska, Ga. (March 1, 2013) --- The Milligan College baseball team opened the Appalachian Athletic Conference portion of their schedule on Friday as they split a doubleheader with Reinhardt University in Waleska, Ga. The Buffaloes were unable to complete a seventh inning rally in the first game as they fell 2-1, and then pulled away early to take an 8-6 victory in the nightcap.
In the first game, the Eagles were the first to score as they put on two runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth. The Buffaloes had the tying run on plate in the top of the seventh, but could only get
Cody Hyder (Johnson City, Tenn.) across home plate.
On the mound,
Ethan Fleenor (Johnson City, Tenn.) was handed a complete game loss as he allowed just two earned runs on six hits. At the plate,
Brandon Malone (Maryville, Tenn.) was 2-for-3, while
Tyree Jefferies (Jackson, Tenn.) was 1-for-3.
In the second game, the Buffaloes jumped out to a 6-1 lead after three innings of play. Reinhardt trimmed the gap with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Milligan added runs in the fifth and seventh innings to secure the win.
Nathan Millsap (Kingsport, Tenn.) led the way at the plate as he was 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
Sam Tarleton (West Palm Beach, Fla.) was 3-for-3 with four RBIs.
On the mound,
Brent Whittington (North Wilkesboro, N.C.) picked up the win. In four innings of work, Whittington allowed three earned runs on five hits.
Milligan moves to 1-1 in AAC play and 8-7 overall.
The Buffaloes return to action on Saturday, March 2, as they wrap up the three-game series with Reinhardt in a nine-inning game. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
