Buffaloes softball sweeps Montreat

Milligan College, Tenn. (March 27, 2013) --- The Milligan College softball team picked up a pair of victories over Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Montreat College on Wednesday afternoon at Anglin Field. The Buffaloes used two late runs to take a 5-3 victory in the first game, and Milligan jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they took a 6-4 win to complete the sweep in the second game.

After Montreat opened the first game with a two-run homerun, the Buffaloes were unable to bring a base runner across home plate as they trailed 2-0 after three innings of play. In the fourth inning, Catherine McGinnis (Knoxville, Tenn.) put the Buffaloes on the board in the bottom of the fourth as she hit a solo homerun to close the Milligan deficit to 2-1 after four complete innings.

The Buffaloes tied the game in the home side of the fifth inning when Emily Biggs (Kingsport, Tenn.) hit a leadoff triple and then scored on a Montreat error. Milligan loaded the bases, but they were unable to add another run in the frame. Montreat regained a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly. However, Milligan countered in the bottom of the inning as Abby Hughes (Rogersville, Tenn.) hit her first home run of the season, and Krista Lambdin (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Biggs crossed home plate to give the Buffaloes the 5-3 victory.

Biggs led the way at the plate as she went 2-for-3, while McGinnis was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. In the pitching circle, Chancli Connatser (Maryville, Tenn.) allowed two runs on two hits with seven strikeouts in a no decision. Megan Nicol (Surry, British Columbia) picked up the win as she allowed one run on two hits.

The second game saw Milligan jump out to an early lead as Jessica Connatser (Maryville, Tenn.) and Biggs crossed home plate in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. After Nicol recorded three strikeouts in the second inning, Lindsey Keys (Johnson City, Tenn.) scored on a J. Connatser hit to increase the Milligan lead to 3-0.

Milligan continued to extend their lead in the fourth inning as Hughes and Keys crossed home plate to give the Buffaloes a 5-0 lead. After Montreat scored two runs in the top of the fifth, Milligan saw Lambdin hit a solo homerun to open the side. The Lady Cavaliers added two runs in the sixth, but the Buffaloes ended the inning with a double play and preserved the victory.

Camille Olvey (Maryville, Tenn.) was 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Buffaloes, while J. Connatser, Lambdin and Hughes each added a hit apiece. Nicol picked up her second win of the day as she allowed just two earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts in five innings of work.

With the sweep, Milligan improves to 5-14 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
