Buffaloes baseball drop two games to No. 1 TWC

Athens, Tenn. (March 9, 2013) --- The Milligan College baseball team was unable to complete two late rallies as they dropped two Appalachian Athletic Conference games to No. 1 Tennessee Wesleyan College on Saturday in Athens, Tenn. The Buffaloes fell 3-1 in the first game, and then fell 10-6 in the second game.
 
   The Bulldogs jumped out early as they scored all three of their runs in the second inning. Milligan broke onto the board as Brett Mercurio (West Palm Beach, Fla.) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. However, the Buffaloes were unable to extend the rally before the third out.
 
   At the plate, Corey McPherson (Johnson City, Tenn.) went 2-for-3 with a double. Justin Johnson (North Wilkesboro, Tenn.) was handed the loss in four innings of work as he allowed one earned run on six hits. Tyler Wilson (Johnson City, Tenn.) pitched two no-hit innings.
 
   In the second game, Tennessee Wesleyan opened the scoring as they held a 3-0 lead after three innings of play. The Buffaloes answered with a run of their own in the fourth, but the Bulldogs answered with four runs in the home side of the inning. Milligan battled back in the top of the sixth with three runs. After TWC added three more runs in the sixth, the Buffaloes were unable to complete a rally as they scored just two runs in the seventh.
 
   Brent Whittington (North Wilkesboro, N.C.) was handed the loss in five innings of work. He allowed three earned runs on six hits.
 
   Brandon Malone (Maryville, Tenn.) led the way at the plate as he went 2-for-3 with a homerun and three RBIs. Nathan Millsap (Kingsport, Tenn.) was 2-for-4 with a triple, while Sam Tarlton (Chuckey, Tenn.) was 2-for-3. Cody Hyder (Elizabethton, Tenn.) recorded a home run for Milligan.
 
   Milligan falls to 9-9 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
 
   The Buffaloes return to action on Sunday, March 10, as they wrap up the series against Tennessee Wesleyan with a nine-inning contest. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
