Buffaloes baseball rolls past Montreat

Montreat, N.C. (April 25, 2013) --- The Milligan College baseball team limited Montreat College to just one hit in the final five innings as the Buffaloes rolled to a 12-3 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory on Thursday afternoon in Montreat, N.C.
 
   Tyree Jeffries (Jackson, Tenn.) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with a two-run homerun, but the Cavaliers answered with a run of their own in the home side of the frame. After a scoreless second inning, Blake Buck (Maryville, Tenn.) drove Corey McPherson (Johnson City, Tenn.) in to score in the third inning. However, Montreat scored two runs of their own to tie the game at 3-3 entering the fourth quarter.
 
   Milligan took control of the game in the fourth inning as Brett Mercurio (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Hunter Carpenter (Sneedville, Tenn.) drove in runs, and Jeffries hit his second homerun of the game in the fifth inning to push the Milligan lead to 6-3. The Buffaloes secured the win in the seventh inning as they scored six runs to take a 12-3 lead as Milligan limited the Cavaliers to just one hit over the final five innings.
 
   Jeffries ended the game 2-for-4 with two home runs, three runs scored and three RBIs. McPherson ended the game 1-for-3 with three runs scored and a double, while Carpenter was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Logan Suggs (Newport, Tenn.) went 1-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs.
 
   Justin Freeman (Dayton, Tenn.) picked up the win on the mound. In four innings of work, Freeman did not give up a hit. Justin Johnson (Black Mountain, Tenn.) received a no-decision in the start as he allowed three earned runs in three innings of work.
 
   With the win, Milligan improves to 23-22 overall and 10-12 in AAC action.
 
   The Buffaloes return to action on Friday, April 26, as they wrap up the regular season with an AAC doubleheader against Montreat. First pitch in Montreat, N.C., is set for 1 p.m.
