Milligan softball celebrates senior day with sweep

Milligan College, Tenn. (April 6, 2013) --- The Milligan College softball team celebrated senior day with a sweep of Appalachian Athletic Conference foe St. Andrews University on Saturday afternoon at Anglin Field. Milligan cruised to an 8-1 victory in the first game then held off a late St. Andrews charge to take a 5-3 victory in the second game.
 
   In the first game of the day, Emily Biggs (Kingsport, Tenn.) led off the inning with a double, and then scored off a Krista Lambdin (Knoxville, Tenn.) single. The Buffaloes added two more runs in the inning as Jessica Connatser (Maryville, Tenn.) and Lambdin crossed home plate to give Milligan a 3-0 lead. St. Andrews scored a run in the top of the second. However, the Buffaloes countered as Jessica Wheelock (Gray, Tenn.) crossed home plate off a Lambdin sacrifice fly.
 
   After the third and fourth innings went scoreless, Milligan struck for four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Connatser drove in two runs with a double, and Abbey Hughes (Rogersville, Tenn.) and Biggs crossed the plate to give Milligan an 8-1 lead after five innings. From there, the Buffaloes shut down the Lady Knights to preserve the victory.
 
   Lambdin finished the game 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Wheelock ended the game 3-for-4, while Connatser was 2-for-3 at the plate. Chancli Connatser (Maryville, Tenn.) picked up the win in a complete game effort as she allowed two runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts.
 
   The second game saw neither team able to get on the board in the first two innings. The Buffaloes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third as Biggs scored off a J. Connatser single, and then J. Connatser crossed home plate in a run-down situation.
 
   In the bottom of the fourth, Lindsey Keys (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Hughes scored off a Biggs triple. Biggs crossed home plate off a J. Connatser sacrifice hit to give the Buffaloes a 5-0 lead heading into the fifth inning. St. Andrews scored three runs in the final inning, but Milligan used a double play to end the game and take the victory.
 
   Biggs and J. Connatser finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Hughes was 2-for-3 at the plate. In the pitching circle, Samantha Mahala (Mountain City, Tenn.) picked up the win as she allowed just two hits in two innings of work.
  
   With the sweep, Milligan improves to 10-4 in AAC action and 11-14 overall.
 
   The Buffaloes return to action on Tuesday, April 10, as they travel to AAC foe Columbia College. First pitch in Columbia, S.C., is set for 3 p.m.
