Milligan volleyball falls in two games

Milligan College, Tenn. (Aug. 31, 2013) --- The Milligan College volleyball team came up short in a pair of games on Saturday on the second day of the Milligan Mountain Madness Tournament inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse. The Buffaloes fell 3-0 to Emmanuel College in the day's first game, and closed out the tournament with a 3-0 loss to Southern Wesleyan University.
 
   After the Buffaloes erased an early 5-1 deficit against Emmanuel, the teams traded points until the Lady Lions edged ahead to a 25-23 first set victory. Milligan battled to a 14-8 lead in the second set, but they were unable to hold off a late Emmanuel charge as they fell 25-23. The decisive third neither team was able to pull away as the set was tied at 17-17. However, Emmanuel went on a 4-1 run to capture the set 25-23 and take the victory.
 
   Senior Kylie Whaley (Maryville, Tenn.) recorded 12 kills, while freshman Samantha Bruinius (Chicago, Ill.) had 10 digs and seven kills. Kaitlyn Round (Billings, Mont.) and Heather Harvey (Bristol, Tenn.) had 14 and 12 digs, respectively. Jessica Davenport (Cleveland, Tenn.) recorded 26 assists.
 
   Against Southern Wesleyan, the Buffaloes closed within two points of the Lady Warriors after falling behind to start the first set. However, that was as close as Milligan could get as SWU pulled out to a 25-15 first set victory.
 
   In the second set, the teams traded points as the set was tied at 15-15, but Milligan was unable to answer a late charge as they fell 25-20. The decisive third set saw the Buffaloes unable to battle back as they dropped the set by a score of 25-16.
 
   Bruinius had a team high nine kills, while Whaley recorded six kills. Round ended the match with 15 digs. Davenport recorded 23 assists, while freshman Grace Ann Moorhouse (Morristown, Tenn.) finished with nine digs.
 
   The Buffaloes move to 0-7 overall.
 
   Milligan returns to action on Friday, Sept. 6, at the Battle of the Springs in Franklin Springs, Ga. The Buffaloes will face Paine College at 1 p.m., Northwood University at 5 p.m., and close out the day with Coker College at 7 p.m.
