WEST POINT, Ga. (Jan. 18, 2014) â€"
Mickey Woods scored on a baseline jumper with seven seconds left in regulation to give the Milligan men's basketball team a narrow 63-62 victory over Point University Saturday night.
ÂÂ
Milligan won its third straight to improve to 11-7 (5-5 AAC). Point (4-16, 3-7 AAC) dropped its seventh consecutive decision.
ÂÂ
Woods provided the game-winner after Point's DeVonn Pierce converted an and-one to give the Skyhawks their first lead of the game, 62-61, with 60 seconds remaining.
ÂÂ
Milligan, which had scored on its opening possession and seemed in control of the game early on, went ahead by as many as 13 in the first half and even led by five with three minutes left in the second. Pierce's old-fashioned three-point play capped a 6-0 run over a span of two minutes.
ÂÂ
Woods and
Morgan McLeod scored 14 points and added five rebounds apiece to lead Milligan's efforts.
Kurt Brooks, one of nine Buffaloes to make it into the scoring column, scored 12 points off the bench.
ÂÂ
"This was a great win on the road tonight," said Head Coach
Bill Robinson. "We were able to overcome foul trouble and a long bus ride. I'm very proud of our team effort."
ÂÂ
For Point, Pierce finished with eight points on 2-of-4 shooting. Mikal Rodgers led all scorers with 15 points, and Brandon Wright registered a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds).
ÂÂ
Milligan returns home Wednesday, Jan. 22 for an AAC rematch against St. Andrews (2-12, 1-9 AAC). The Buffaloes defeated St. Andrews 89-50 on the road back before Thanksgiving. Wednesday's tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. inside the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse, following the women's game.
