WEST POINT, Ga. (Jan. 18, 2014) â€" Milligan's defense kept Point University scoreless over the final three and a half minutes of a 74-70 road victory Saturday evening in AAC women's basketball action.
ÂÂ
Milligan kept pace with the trio of conference leaders, improving to a league second-best 12-7 (8-3 AAC). Point fell to 10-10 (4-7 AAC).
ÂÂ
Unlike the teams' previous meeting which consisted of 17 points over the final three minutes in an 88-80 win for Milligan at home, Saturday's game was all about making late stops. The Buffaloes forced two turnovers and seven missed shots over their last eight defensive stands while going on a 7-0 run during the same stretch.
ÂÂ
"It was great to be part of such a well-played game on the part of both teams," said Head Coach
Rich Aubrey. "Our players made just a few more big plays down the stretch."ÂÂ
ÂÂ
Milligan trailed by six inside eight minutes and trimmed Point's lead to 70-67 with 3:31 left before
Robyn Anthony and
Allison Jones finished off the scoring for both teams. Jones' pair of free throws with 2:47 remaining marked the 12th tie as well as the 17th and final lead change of the night.
ÂÂ
Jones led all scorers with 23 points and four rebounds. She was 7-of-10 from the field, 1-of-1 from three, and 8-of-8 from the foul line.
ÂÂ
Anthony was one of three other Buffaloes to reach double figures, finishing with 10 points and three assists.
ÂÂ
Chelsey Weddle and
Kayla Kelly each narrowly missed double-doubles. Weddle had 10 points, eight boards. Kelly scored nine points with 11 rebounds.
ÂÂ
Four Skyhawks found their way into double figures in scoring, led by Dereese Owens' 21 points on 8-of-25 shooting.
ÂÂ
