Women's hoops drops AAC road battle to Union, 86-63

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 30, 2014) â€" Milligan College women's basketball fell victim to a strong second half by Union, and the Buffaloes were defeated 86-63 in Thursday's rescheduled AAC matchup at the Robsion Arena.
 
Milligan (13-9, 9-5 AAC) suffered the season sweep to the Bulldogs, falling 84-70 at home on Nov. 12. Union, currently receiving votes in the NAIA top-25 poll, improved to a league second-best 15-6 (11-2 AAC).
 
Union's strong second half included 15-of-31 (48.4%) made shots from the floor. The Bulldogs were 4-of-10 from three-point range in the second half and 12-of-31 (38.7%) from downtown for the game.
 
Union senior Marah Rice connected on five three-pointers and led all scorers with a career-high 19 points, 17 in the first half. She made four threes through the first 10 minutes of action and was a major factor in Union never trailing.
 
Milligan fell behind 42-36 at the half but could get no closer after the break. Only a pair of Buffaloes made more than one basket post-intermission, and the team combined for 0-for-9 from three-point territory.
 
Hayley Wyrick led Milligan with 18 points on 5-of-11 shooting. The freshman scored 13 in the first half but was held to one basket in the second.
 
Chelsey Weddle scored 11 points and added 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the year. Allison Jones and Kayla Kelly scored 15 and 14, respectively.
 
Aside from Rice's big night, two other Bulldogs registered double-doubles as Amber Taylor scored 14 points with 14 assists, and Lydia Nash scored 16 points with 10 rebounds.
 
Milligan will stay on the road Saturday, Feb. 1, traveling to AAC foe Columbia College (7-15, 3-9 AAC) in Columbia, S.C. The Buffs will return home with the men on Wednesday, Feb. 5 for a doubleheader against Truett-McConnell College.
