JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 10, 2014) â€" For 82 minutes, the Milligan College women's soccer team battled in a scoreless draw with the Appalachian Athletic Conference frontrunner, but it was the Lady Knights of St. Andrews University who came away victorious, 1-0, under rainy conditions Friday night at Science Hill High School.
ÂÂ
The match, originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon on Milligan's campus, was rescheduled for Friday night due to what would have been unfavorable playing conditions on Anglin Field.
ÂÂ
With the loss, the Buffaloes snapped an unbeaten streak of four games and fell to 4-6-1 (3-2-1 AAC), a game and a half behind second-place Reinhardt University and a full two games back from St. Andrews. SAU improved to 9-1-1 (5-0-1 AAC) and remained one of only two unbeaten teams left in the league. The Lady Knights also won their fifth straight despite being held to one goal for the first time since their season opener.
ÂÂ
Midfielder Olivia Thoroughman provided St. Andrews with the match-winner in the 83rd minute on a goal from long range that she placed perfectly over the outstretched arms of Milligan goalkeeper
Charlotte Stephens. Nicole Bass had the assist after dribbling along the end line and finding Thoroughman open roughly 30 yards out.
ÂÂ
The goal marked the 13th shot Stephens faced and the third one put on frame by the Lady Knights. Milligan managed only three shots, one on goal, but came up with numerous chances following set plays in the attacking third.
ÂÂ
Sami Joy was on the back end of one of those chances early in the second half, sending a shot wide after a corner kick taken by
Christine Hardin.
Lauren Brewer had a similar chance late in the first half, pushing a header wide after a Hardin corner.
ÂÂ
Milligan finished the night with three corner kicks compared to St. Andrews' seven. The Buffaloes were outshot 13-3, including 3-1 in shots on goal. Stephens made two saves.
ÂÂ
More league tests await Milligan over the next eight days as the Buffaloes face the only other league unbeaten, Point University (7-2-3, 3-0-2 AAC), on Tuesday, Oct. 14 on the road before turning around for second-place Reinhardt University (9-2, 5-1 AAC) on Saturday, Oct. 18 at home. All remaining regular season home games are scheduled to feature live stats and video.
