WEST POINT, Ga. (Oct. 15, 2014) â€" Point University proved to be too much for the Milligan College women's soccer team Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Buffaloes 4-1 on the road.
ÂÂ
With the matches against St. Andrews University and Point, the Buffaloes (4-7-1, 3-3-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference) have faced the top two teams in the conference, and they will take on Reinhardt who currently holds the number three position in their next match on Oct. 18.
ÂÂ
Point (8-2-3, 4-0-2 AAC) retained its undefeated streak in the AAC and vies for first place against St. Andrews University who is also undefeated in the conference. The Skyhawks have not lost a match since Sept. 9 and have outscored their opponents 30-8 in that time.
ÂÂ
Point struck first, sending in a goal in the 24th minute off the feet of Andrea Lopez to take the lead. From there, the Skyhawks retained control, earning another goal from Erin Elmore in the final two minutes of the first half.
ÂÂ
Point increased its lead to 3-0 with a header from Kristabelle Rangel in the 61st minute, but Milligan would not be shutout.
Lauren Brewer found the back of the net for the Buffs less than a minute after Rangel's goal to give Milligan a glimmer of hope, but the Skyhawks could not be contained as Celly Ruiz became the fourth player to score a goal for Point in the 73rd minute, making the score 4-1.
ÂÂ
The Buffs were held to only four shots on the afternoon, but each shot was precise, as three of the shots were on goal but were saved by Katie Barsotti.
ÂÂ
Charlotte Stephens bravely protected the Milligan goal against 21 shots from the Skyhawks, receiving five saves in the process. ÂÂ
ÂÂ
The Buffs return home for their next matchup against Reinhardt University who was slated to win the AAC title in the preseason poll. The match will begin at 1 p.m., and live stats and video will be provided. For more information, visit milliganbuffs.com.
