BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 2, 2014) â€" Not even a five-point lead on game point was safe for the Milligan College volleyball team Thursday night on the road as the Buffaloes were swept by Union College 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 26-24) in Appalachian Athletic Conference action.
Milligan (9-11, 3-3 AAC), despite trailing for much of the first two games, looked to turn the tide in game three, climbing to a 24-19 lead but watched Union (14-6, 5-1 AAC) rally off the last seven points of the match to complete the sweep. The Buffs committed a total of 39 errors in the loss.
Samantha Bruinius, who led Milligan with 15 kills earlier this season when the Buffs took a five-game win over Union at the Mountain Madness tournament, was held to four kills.
Jessica Davenport, who had 44 assists back in their August meeting, was limited to 19 assistsÂÂ
Thursday, and
Kaitlyn Round, who had 21 digs in the first match, had 12 in the rematch.
Defensively, Milligan held Union to an attack rate of .167 while forcing 28 errors on the Bulldogs' end.
Emilee Linkous, Bruinius and
Jenna Conkin all took part in the defensive effort by registering at least one solo block.
Milligan looked to take the opening game as a Bruinius service ace tied the match at 20-20, and seconds later, the Buffaloes took their first lead at 21-20. But just like they would later do in game three, the Bulldogs rallied to take the game by scoring five of the final six points.
Union's Ana Calaza, the reigning libero of the week in the AAC, recorded 17 digs and was the server for Union during the final run. She was also one of seven Bulldogs to register at least three kills. Paige Moore led Union with nine.
Milligan will continue the season on the road onÂÂ
Saturday, Oct. 4 for another AAC rematch against Tennessee Wesleyan College (5-10, 3-3 AAC). The Buffaloes beat TWC in four games when they met earlier this season at the Mountain Madness Tournament in August. Milligan does not return home untilÂÂ
Tuesday, Oct. 14.
