Decisive victory over Tennessee Wesleyan puts volleyball back on track

ATHENS, Tenn. (Oct. 4, 2014) â€" The Milligan College volleyball team combined smart gameplay with Tennessee Wesleyan errors to gain another Appalachian Athletic Conference win Saturday morning, 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-16).

Milligan improved to 10-11 overall and 4-3 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference with the win over Tennessee Wesleyan College (6-11, 4-4 AAC). The Lady Bulldogs had just come off of a four-game win over Montreat College, whom the Buffs take on next week.

Two services aces from Tennessee Wesleyan's Chassity Taylor started game one, but the Buffs answered back with two aces of their own from Jessica Davenport and added two kills from Marissa Langford to take a 5-3 lead. From there, the Buffs guarded their lead, and after a 10-point run led by Langford, Milligan easily took game one 25-16.

Tennessee Wesleyan started game two with a 2-0 lead as well, but an ace and kill from Emilee Linkous quickly tied the game at 2-2. The game remained close (9-9), but as Milligan crossed the ten point threshold, they extended their lead off of seven total errors by the Lady Bulldogs. The Buffs would finally take the game 25-15.

Milligan started game three with a 1-0 lead, and after an eight-point run led by Linkous and Samantha Bruinius, they quickly extended it to a 12-4 lead. As before, the Buffs kept the lead for the rest of the game, taking the last four points of the match to win 25-16.

Milligan earned 33 kills in the match with a team attack percentage of .305. Langford led the Buffs with 13 kills, and Davenport totaled 19 assists and three service aces on the day.

Defensively, Kaitlyn Round picked up 12 digs, and Linkous and Bailey Thomas both had solo blocks in the match, two and one respectively.

Milligan will continue its conference action on the road against Montreat College on Oct. 7. The same two teams will then meet up again on Oct. 14 when Milligan returns home after its seven-game stint on the road.
